Founded in 1952, Chinese Bible Mission began with Rev. Sen Wong and his wife in Oregon, USA, who started holding Bible study gatherings in their home to reach the Chinese community. A recent Bible College graduate from Multnomah School of the Bible located in Portland, Oregon, Sen received a gift of $30 from his pastor, Rev. Daniel Hager, to start a ministry to reach the American-born Chinese for Christ. This was the beginning of Chinese Bible Evangel, later known as Chinese Bible Mission and now CBM. Their early vision was to share the gospel with Chinese people and equip them to live out their faith, and these small beginnings quickly grew into a broader ministry.

In 1956, the Lord led Sen and his wife, June, to move from Portland, Oregon to SF Bay Area in California. The first church was started in their Oakland home with a small group of children and young people. Eight more churches were planted in the next five decades in the SF Bay Area and Sacramento area.

Growth in North America

Over the next decades, CBM expanded beyond home Bible studies to include:

  • Church planting in Chinese-American communities

  • Retreats, camps, and discipleship programs for youth and families

  • Training and mentoring leaders to serve in local congregations

By the late 20th century, CBM had established a strong network of ministries in the United States, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area, while continuing to focus on spiritual growth and biblical teaching.

Global Expansion and Asia Ministry

Building on its domestic foundation, CBM extended its vision globally, and in 2017 officially launched its Asia ministry. This expansion included:

  • Church planting in Taiwan, including the establishment of Linkou International Church

  • Leadership training and pastoral development in partnership with local churches

  • Short-term and immersive mission experiences for students and emerging leaders

Today, CBM functions as a global mission organization focused on making disciples, equipping leaders, and supporting church growth across the world, while maintaining its commitment to Chinese communities and culturally contextual ministry.
